I spontaneously joined photographer Sandro Diener and director Stephan Usteri on their booklet shoot for the band “S.A.R.Z.”. Those young fellas keep their rockers life pretty solid and publish their new album and webpage this summer.

A perfectly shaped Big Air in the centre of Arosa’s ski resort serves as the stage of Elias Ambühl TV’s fourth episode. Elias Ambühl, his elder brother Andri and Aussie Red Bull rider Russ Henshaw are the artists. Production took place during the Golden Hours, filming in backlight – which explains the episode’s name.
Despite the fast changing April weather the crew managed to squeeze in a breath-taking sunset session on the first day. On the second day the storm and snowfall were too severe so the crew decided to go to Chur for some bouldering instead. Apart from the obvious skiing, climbing is Elias’ favourite sport and a perfect compensation in terms of physiology.
On the third day the crew staged an action-packed sunrise session, with the brothers Elias and Andri pushing each other to maximum performances and innovative tricks. But have a look yourself!

The tenth anniversary of the Austrian Freeski Open (AFP, gold) just finished and ATOMIC athlete Andreas Hatveit won his second consecutive Gold medal! He impressed the judges with his flawless and technical run, the perfect result before the upcoming Euro X Games.

I personally, had already a great time before the AFO – shooting for ATOMIC together with Jossi Wells, Andreas Hâtveit and Elias Ambühl.

The Elias Ambühl TV Episode „X Games“ shows five minutes of Elias’ stay at the X Games 16 in Aspen, Colorado. Despite he did not fly on the podium, he is totally happy with that part containing lots of ski action, nice images and good sound. It shows day and night action in the slopestyle and on the big air. With nice takes as Double Cork 1440 and Switch Double Cork 1260.

I worked lately for Swiss Snowboards and on the 2nd episode for Elias Ambühl TV in Colorado, USA. We had great fun during our trip and we were lucky with the weather – blue bird almost everyday.

It was my first “official” production with my Epic X and damn – i love this camera! Although it wasn’t easy pulling focus with the PL-Mount – as a “One Man Show”. I’m still waiting for my Canon-Mount. A lot of cool shootings are coming up the next few days before im flying back to Aspen for the Winter X Games 16.

We won the “Swiss Hotel Film Award 2011″ with “Monsieur Du Lit”

The Swiss Hotel Film Award 2011 gave after 2009 the second time insights into the dazzling and marvelous world of the hotel industry. The award ceremony took place on 25 August 2011 at the invitation of hotelleriesuisse in a festive manner in front of 500 guests at the Arena Filmcity in Zurich’s Sihlcity.

Actor Anatole Taubmann was celebrity guest of the evening. He provided the audience with thrilling insights of his cinematic career. Xenia Tchoumitcheva, a Swiss model, reported her experience with hotels. Swiss TV and radio anchorman Sven Epiney hosted the event.

I want to thank the whole team, espacially Timo von Gunten for this amazing time!

Last week i had the chance to film the famous Windlin brothers in Lac Blanc – a pretty nice bike park in France. I tested some new gear and im gonna try some new softwear in the post. I’m still not sure if i’m gonna change my editing softwear with Avid or Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 but im sure i’m not downgrade my FCP7 to FCP X/10. Still disappointed about that!

Recently, I worked on my first musicvideo for the very talented, new band Al Pride. Producer and director Amarin Spörri wrote a beautiful story for their first single ‘Popsong’.

The young actors Tanja Lehmann and Joel Singh embellished the nice story as couple in love.

The release of Al Pride’s debut album ‘Hello Blue Light’ will be in November 2011.

I own the Ex 1r and shoot a lot of sports with it – I think the most obvious change between these two cameras, is the inclusion of the new Exmor Super 35 CMOS sensor and interchangeable lens mounts, facilitating shallow depth of field with a fairly impressive dynamic range. The menu is almost the same as in Ex 1r, so i found all the settings quick and well in the menu of the F3.

If i wanna go shoot action sports with it? Oh yes – i would love to! For me is it a big request to bring, a more cinematic style into action sports! Of course it will be a challange to bring all these nice PL-lenses,  all the nice cutlery to the hill and pulling focus when Elias Ambühl stomping his triple 14. I just need more manpower on the mountain – to get the nice “film quality” of the Sony F3 or RED MX etc. No one man show – rugged style ,like on the Ex 1r or on DSLR’s. I’m working on that fact.

The Sony F3 shoots MPEG-2 Long GOP 4:2:0 8bit at 35 Mbps to two Sony SxS card slots, and dual link HD-SDI ports allow for recording full 4:2:2 to an external device. Sony also released details of the paid firmware upgrade for the F3. The CBK-RGB01 upgrade for the F3 will allow for 4:4:4 uncompressed output over 3G-SDI (the next-generation of HD-SDI) or dual-link HD-SDI, four pre-loaded look up tables (LUTs), five custom LUTs, and most importantly an S-LOG workflow. So the  image quality of the PMW-F3 seems definitely better than DSLRs.

Nevertheless, im flying this sunday to Iceland to shoot a fashion clip – on a good old 5d mark 2. We will take a bunch of Canon L-series – like the 8-15/4.0, 16-35/2.8, 50/1.2, 100/2.8macro and 70-200/2.8 with us. We also bring a VOCAS follow focus & MB incl. different filters – and of course the DitoGear – Omnislider. Im so excited…can’t wait to go.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

We had 2 Omnislider, 3 x 5d’s mrk 2, 2 x 7d’s a bunch of Canon L-series with filters etc. and a few tripods with us. A lot of material to produce pictures on 9000 feet and temperature between -20 and 15 degrees. Humans and material at the limit we could say.

The slogan on Sunday morning was similar to the one on the Titanic some years ago: Women and children first. Ok, let’s make that rookies. Judged by the tricks they showed  us they seem to be far away from kids. Kai Mahler ended up first, followed by Rico Schuler, who bailed in the training and had quite a headache when he dropped into the finals. Fredi Iliano completed the podium. The girls got inspired by the rookies and rocked the slopestyle very hard as well. The absolute highlight was Alisson Charmey who stomped a massive frontflip over the last kicker (aka Big Mama). Oh la la, c’est sympa! She took the gold medal in the end, followed by Tanja Gmür and Alexia Bonelli.

The best four rookies got the chance to participate in the men’s semis. And Kai “lamasticot” Mahler showed the big boys from the beginning, that he is in a pretty decent shape. His run (270 on & 270 off rail; switch double cork9 safety; right cork7 tail; double cork10 mute to nose; dub switch up on box) turned out to be the best of the day. With the result, that Kai went home with two gold medals, two ipads and two Swiss Freeski Champion-jackets. That’s pretty much for a fifteen-year-old. Jonas Hunziker was the first runner-up and Yannic Lerjen ended up third. Congratulations not only to these guys but to all the riders. It was a fantastic weekend with action on a massive level. The story of Powderhorn starts with the story of Jackson Hole, a small Wyoming town in the Western Rocky Mountains that became the birthplace of a legend in the mid 1960s.
Back then the whole world was gripped by “ski fever”. Ski lifts shot up everywhere. In America, skiiers flocked to sophisticated places like Aspen, Sun Valley and Vail. And in 1965 Jackson Hole took its place on the map. The Jackson Hole Aerial Tramway, the most modern gondola lift of its time, is still transporting skiiers high into the Tetons.
“If you go back to ski someplace else, the world seems flat.”
Skiing became synonymous with unbounded freedom, adventure and a romantic lifestyle. This new attitude towards life that evolved in the 1960s attracted masses of young people from the cities to Jackson Hole, where their only worry was the snow conditions – a generation of freestylers who rode their skis like old-time cowboys and lived to “ski the outer limits”.

Obviously, for skiing to this extreme, ordinary skiwear was not good enough. Powderhorn was ready to enter the scene. In 1972, in a backyard factory in Jackson Hole, the first snow-proof western jacket by Powderhorn was created, and from then on it was out on the slopes with the aces.

Slip it on, and immediately experience that unique awareness of life that goes hand in hand with an unbridled passion for snow.

The Survival of the Fittest is a Big-Air competition gathering 30 top riders for an epic session. Once again amazing contest over Switzerland organized by the crew from Crans Montana!

The Survival of the Fittest started today in Crans-Montana with the training day.

15 Snowboarders and 15 Freeskiers arrived and discovered the epic set-up built by the event shapers. Perfect bluebird sky and summer temperatures put the riders in great conditions to warm-up before competition start.

On saturday 26th, the Survival of the Fittest will kick off with the Snowboard Battle. The Freeski day will follow on sunday 27th.

Important for Freeski-Fans:

Due to the bad snow conditions the Swiss Freeski Championships cannot be hold in Les Crosets. So much for the bad news. Good news is: We found an alternative. The guys from the NBC park in Hoch-Ybrig agreed spontaneously to host the Swiss Champs on 2/3 April 2011.

Die Skicross Rennen fanden wie letztes Jahr im Gebiet Sternen statt. Der Start befindet sich im oberen Teil der Sternenpiste. Die permanente Skicross-Piste wurde gegenüber der letzten Saison optimiert und weist eine anspruchsvolle harmonisch ins Gelände eingefügte Streckenführung auf. Zwei hervorragende Pisten in Wildhaus zeigten sich am Sonntagmorgen bei herrlichem Winterwetter. Die Organisatoren leisteten vollen Einsatz und schafften ideale Bedingungen für mehr als 700 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer. Unter den Startenden waren auch Kids aus Deutschland und Österreich vertreten. Gleich drei Rennfahrer aus dem WM-Ort Garmisch-Partenkirchen rangierten sich unter den besten drei und dürfen somit am Finale in Davos nochmals antreten. (www.gp-migros.ch)

Yesterday afternoon i had the time to test my new lens with the 7d in the  succulent exhibition in Zürich and found a wonderful and surreal world with these cacti.  The”macro-world” is definitely very interesting. I’m looking forward to film with Macro and hopefully to use it soon in a narrative!

The European Freeski Open in Laax started yesterday with the first trainings and blue bird weather. What a suprise – after bad weather situations the last couple of years.

A bunch of young guns killed already the well shaped slopestyle & halfpipe course, so im looking forward to an exciting event and keep you daily updated with some behind the scene pictures, results etc. Be sure to check back soon!

A few days ago we headed for a short trip to test out a first prototype of the DitoGear PortaSlider which is a new, modular timelapse slider dedicated to entry-level an professional timelapse shooters.

We wanted to check how the concepts worked and gave a hard-testing run to the new product. With a total of 14 one-meter track units and 2 trolley designs to test out we had a lot of fun!

The track joints seem to work flawlessly and really precisely even on such long track. The trolley need some refinements and this week we’re going to test out a new, improved design.

Preparing for shots with a 14 meter track takes some time, but it is definitely worth effort giving a whole bunch of new creative options for shooting.

- modular track design (0.5m, 1.0m, 2.0m modules)

First test:

I finally found some time to test my sweet new tool – the DitoGear™ CrankSlider.

Actually FedEx screwed it up before i left to the US,  because they didn’t send me the CrankSlider on time. So FedEx promised me to send me the package direct to Apsen for the X Games but it arrived a week later after i already had left for Park City and the Freestyle World Championships. Bummer! Afterwards i told them to send it back to Switzerland – also for overwight reasons but that’s another story:)

Back to the CrankSlider – im already in love with this tool. The silder is super handy,  perfect to travel,  runs super smooth and looks great! Check out the little test-video i made on the 7d with  70-200/ 2.8, 100/2.8 and 16-35/2.8 lenses further down. Can’t wait to use the CrankSlider on the next production – which is btw this weekend! Congrats to Bobby Brown for winning the Freeski Slopestyle championship.. But it’s Alex Schlopy topping the podium today! After Winter X Games in Aspen and a great time with Swiss Ski at the Freestyle World Ski Championship in Deer Valley/Park City we’re on our final stop in Ogden/Snowbasin for the 3rd an last Dew Tour stop. Elias brother Andri joined the gang and we had terrific fun riding Park City and surfing indoors in Ogden. It was also nice to get some sleep after a lot of work at the Worldchamps. Today was the first training day in Snowbasin – courses looking good. Can’t wait to see some sweet action.

Dank des grossen Engagements der Veranstalter in Zweisimmen konnte am Wochenende die Coop Skicross Tour 2011 mit einem Europacuprennen am Samstag und einem Openrennen am Sonntag eröffnet werden und mit perfekt präparierter Piste durchgeführt werden! Der Event zog insgesamt 340 Fahrer an. Rund 200 Fahrer starteten davon am Sonntag am Openrennen, womit die Startplätze restlos ausverkauft waren: Das stetig steigende Interesse an der Sportart Skicross könnte nicht besser aufgezeigt werden! Day 3:

Another perfect day at Winter X 15 in Aspen – This morning were the slopestyle prelims and Atomic-Teamrider Elias Ambühl came 7th and made it into the finals.

It was nice to talk with Tim Pierce, a talented, young filmmaker out of Wanaka NZ -  he’s producing the Winter of Wells (WOW) – Episodes. They doing some epic stuff this Winter. Keep following these guys – It’s worth it! I took some impressions during the day and  i was one more time so stoked to see Shaun White throwing it down the pipe – huge!

Day 2:

Crystal clear weather, massive action in a perfect shaped slopestyle made my day. Elias Ambühl was able to put down a switch double 12 for the very first time. Can’t wait to cut the edit:)

An other intersting thing is that ESPN presents the Winter X 15 in 3-D. They film with about 10 Sony’s HDR-TD10 (Rigs) which will cover the hole course. I’m really excited to see the final product.

ESPN and ESPN2 will televise 24 hours of live programming from Winter X Games 15, Jan. 27-30, in Aspen, Colo. The network also will present 18 hours of Winter X 15 competition in 3-D on ESPN 3D. In addition, content will be distributed across ESPN3.com, ESPN.com/Action, ESPN Mobile TV and “X Center,” reaching more than 382 million homes, and will be televised live to 154 countries.

After 24 hours of travelling – i finally made it to Aspen. Elias Ambühl and his gang is ready for an exciting week at Buttermilk! The hole setup looks super sick, even the shapers are gonna change the slopestyle-kickers a little bit. They should be fine for tomorrow’s second practise day! I think my new Mac Pro (12-Core, 24GB RAM etc. ) with the 27-inch Cinema Display and Eizo reference-monitor affect my love-hate relationship with editing strongly. Nontheless i’ve got a busy schedule and the new “MacPower-Monster” has to wait for a while. I’m flying to Aspen on monday. Super nice content is coming up – so it’s  worth to hit back soon!

The control panel is familiar to anyone who has used a recent Arriflex or Arricam. Push the green home putton for Exposure Index, Frames Per Second, Shutter Angle, and Color Temperature.

Push the blue menu button for other chores: Recording Format, Gamma, Frames lines, things like that. Push the soft button closest to a label, make a choice by rotating the jog wheel, push to enter.
